May We Never Forget

Today marks the 8th anniversary of 9/11. I cannot believe it has been 8 years already. I can remember that day like it just happened last week.

I was just starting my senior year of High School. I was 17 years old. I went to Clyde High School in Clyde, Ohio. It was 3rd period and I was in Mr. Shellhammer's class all by myself. Since I had pretty much all the credits I needed, I had 3 study halls that year. Since I had Yearbook with Mr. Shellhammer 4th period and study hall 3rd, he let me come down to his empty room during 3rd period. (He was in the study hall teacher during this time and his room was empty... besides me.) It was pretty cool. I would go down there every day and watch TV or get on the Internet. And once in a while actually work on yearbook stuff. ;-)

Well that day when I got on the TV it was about 9:40am. I remember thinking that it was weird because it was the same on all the channels and all the newscasters were talking about how a plane had hit the Pentagon. I just remember thinking it must have been an accidental thing. Then I switched it over the Today Show with Katie Couric and Matt Lauer. And they were showing the World Trade Center Twin Towers. Then I knew this wasn't all an accident. By the time I started to watch it both towers had been hit by planes. But both towers were still standing. I watched both towers fall to the ground. I just sat there in disbelief and I started thinking that Dustin's dad was on a plane that day for business. (Dustin and I had been dating for 6 months at this time.) That started making me nervous. Dustin was in choir class and I knew I couldn't go running into the middle of that class. So I sat there and watched it and started to cry when I began thinking about how there must have been thousands of people dead.

By the time that class was over Dustin came to meet me before our next class and I told him what was happening and he already knew, because by then every classroom was watching TV. And Dustin reassured me his dad wouldn't have been on a plane that was hijacked, because he was no where near those places on his trip. For the rest of the day I remember every class we just sat and watched as that terrible day unfolded right before our eyes. When I got home from school Dustin was over at my house and I remember us going outside and looking up at the sky. It was such a gorgeous day with a big blue sky. There were hardly even any clouds in the sky. And what I remember most about that sky was the fact that there were no plane trails in the sky. That day is forever burned on my brain.

Today is a beautiful blue skyed day too. Here in Ohio, anyway.

Today is a day to remember all who lost their lives and to pray for their families. And remember our troops over seas fighting a war that started because of this day, 8 years ago, and to pray for those people and their families!

So today if you leave a comment me tell me what you were doing that day when you heard the news that our country was under attack. I think it would be nice to share all of our stories and come together on this day!!

May we never forget.
